Cascade VisDev
Cascade Visual Development was my Senior Capstone project at Oregon State University.
In the summer of 2023, I joined a small indie game team as a concept artist and UX designer. In the time since, I had observed that many AAA (corporate) games had lost their uniqueness and identity in pursuit of more realistic and intensive graphics, and thus, have priced out many players who use lower end hardware.
From this issue, the idea of Cascade was born. Much of my design and art work is heavily inspired by a love for the outdoors, so I felt it was perfect to translate that passion into a visual development, or “visdev” project. Cascade explores the idea of a visually beautiful, yet still accessible art direction for a hypothetical video game set in the Pacific Northwest, and shows that better design for games, indie or AAA, is possible.
Deliverables included inspired character and environment concept art, modeled assets, example scenes built in Blender 3D, a short promo reel video, and project overview foamcore-mounted triptych.
